Information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that one person has been killed in renewed clashes between Chokosis and Konkombas in the Chereponi District of the Northern Region, leading to the imposition of curfew in the area.

The deceased, one Nana, was shot at Nanduni, a community near Chereponi in the Northern Region.

The body of the deceased has since been handed over to the family for burial.

Reports suggest that three persons, who sustained gunshot wounds in the legs and hands, are in critical condition at the Chereponi Polyclinic.

Minister for the Interior has, on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and by Executive Instrument, imposed a curfew from 4:00pm to 7:00am on Chereponi and Saboba and other communities effective Thursday, 3rd January, 2019.

A statement sighted by DAILY GUIDE and signed by the Minister, Ambrose Dery indicated that the imposition of the curfew follows violent clashes between two ethnic groups-Konkombas and Chokosis in the towns.

The statement further urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of challenges and use non-violent means to channel their grievances to ensure peace in the area.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has also banned all persons in the afore-mentioned communities from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon, adding that those found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the current clash between the Chokosis and Konkombas in the Chereponi District is due to misunderstandings over the ownership of a plot of land in the area.

A source at Chereponi, Amidu Sualiu Jabakatie, told DAILY GUIDE that women in the affected communities have fled the area to Chereponi with their children.

According to him, residents of the affected communities are living in fear due to the lack of security personnel in the area.

He indicated that three electricity poles along the Chereponi-Saboba Road had been burnt causing a total blackout in the area, which is creating tension in the area because people believe there can be attacks in the night.

Several houses were burnt at Nanduni, Nabruk, Nabrumu and other communities in the area as of Wednesday, 2nd January, 2019.

Meanwhile, some Chekosis living in Tamale in the Northern Region stormed the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to express their displeasure over the lack of security personnel in the affected communities.

Mr. Franklin, who lead the group to the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), told DAILY GUIDE that they want REGSEC to beef up security in the area because they feel they (Chokosis) are rather being attacked.

He, however, threatened that if REGSEC fails to protect them, they would be forced to react and that things would not look good in the area.

The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Solomon Boar, assured members of Chokosi community that security personnel would be deployed to the area.

Meanwhile, about 30 military personnel from Yendi have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
