Grade D7 Not Fail

THE VICE Chancellor of the Central University, Professor Bill Buenar Puplampu, has called for a serious review of the access regimes for entering universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.

According to him, the grade – D7 – is not a fail and should therefore not be a barrier that prevents prospective students to access tertiary education.

Prof. Puplampu, who expressed his excitement about the reforms that government is bringing to the regulatory space with the prospect of the Ghana Tertiary Education Authority/Commission, noted: “We believe it is in the right direction. As these changes take place we call for a critical review of the access regimes for entering universities and other tertiary institutions. The grade – D7 – is not a fail. It should therefore not be a barrier as it is now.”

He made the appeal during the 17th graduation ceremony of the university held at the main campus of the university at Miotso near Tema in the Greater Accra Region, where some 1,598 graduands were presented with various awards and degrees.

The Vice Chancellor expressed worry about how some personalities discredit private universities in the country as a result of the unbridled growth in the number of operators of these educational institutions.

Inasmuch as Central University agrees with the directive that all university lecturers should hold PhD as a key prerequisite for teaching, the Vice Chancellor believes that the policy should differentiate along the types of universities and their focal intents.

Chancellor of the University, Rev. Dr. Mensa Otabil, congratulated the graduands on coming out with good grades.

He therefore urged them to go out and make the university proud in their various fields of work. Awards were presented to graduands who distinguished themselves during their academic studies.

Ewudiwa Elizabeth Maame Esi took home most of the awards after obtaining first class to win The Chancellor’s Award (Overall Best Student), Overall Best Female Student and Best Human Resource Management (HRM) Student. Award winners were given MacBook, plaques and cash prizes.
