STUDENTS IN three Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Ashanti Region have benefited from a mentorship outreach programme by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

The mentorship programme is designed to help SHS students discover their interests, develop significant self-motivation, and become high performing individuals as well as helping them in navigating the path from school to university.

The beneficiary schools were St. Hubert Senior High School, Toase Senior High School and St. Louis Senior High School.

Isabella Sannette Agyekum, General Secretary of the KNUST SRC, who led the programme at the various schools, said such support was key for students, particularly from low-income background, as the challenges faced during transition to university affect them to a greater extend.

For her, the programme is geared towards increased university access and success, providing SHS students, who are academically gifted but need encouragement, to apply to top universities, the necessary support to achieve their goal of attending and graduating from an institution of higher education.

“The ultimate goal is for university admissions to just be the next step in series of successes driven by the student, she intimated.

“Fostering that passion was the idea behind the SRC’s initiative after recognising that success in life is largely dependent on access to higher education, and therefore wants to help others overcome barriers,” she added.

Agripah Opoku, the 2015/16 KNUST SRC Vice President, who was one of the mentors, asked the students to aspire for highly recognised professions, but indicated that they would need to work hard.

According to him, similar mentorship programme entirely changed his life and thinking during his days at Toase SHS and urged the students to take it seriously.
