12 Arrested With Guns In Chereponi

Information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that a combined team of police and military have arrested 12 persons with six single barrel guns at Nambiri – a Chorkosi community in the North East Region.

The team was in the community as part of efforts to bring an end to the protracted clashes between some ethnic groups in that part of the country. They chanced on one person wielding a single barrel gun and decided to probe further, thereby leading to the arrest of the other person.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mohammed Yusif Tanko, who confirmed the arrests to DAILY GUIDE, said the team conducted searches in the community where the weapons were retrieved and their owners arrested to assist in investigations.

According to him, six of the suspects who had no exhibits were released on police enquiry bail. He, however, hinted that the remaining suspects had been detained in Yendi.

So far, eight persons had been arrested in connection with the clashes in Chereponi. Two of the suspects had been granted bail due to their age and health condition. Three persons have died as a result of the renewed violence.

About 22 communities have been burnt into ashes in the clashes and over 2,000 people have been displaced.
