The Police have arrested some 18 students of the University of Ghana, believed to be former occupants of the Commonwealth Hall, for disturbance.
According to a police statement, the 18 suspects, together with about 200 others engaged armed officers for preventing them from entering the hall.
“All 18 suspects are in police custody and will be put before the court to face justice. Security has since been deepened on the campus for academic activities to continue without any hindrance,” the statement said.
“We would like to give the assurance that all other persons involved in the disturbance will be arrested and brought to face justice,” the police stated.
In another related development, the Tesano Divisional Police Command has arrested some 44 suspected criminals from various ‘ghetto’ hideouts in Accra.
The areas included the Abeka Free-Pipe, Fadama, Santana Market, Lapaz, and Seven Days Ofankor. The operations were undertaken by the Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Martin Oduro Appiah and other six officers and 19 men.
The police, at the end of the exercise, retrieved one unregistered motorbike, a pair of scissors, an unspecified number of lighters, and several dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.
The 44 suspects include Osman Sharabutu, aged 21; Kofi George, aged 22; Augustine Obeng, aged 20; Abubakari Sumaila; Ronald Otobre, aged 19; Samuel Lartey, aged 25; and Prince Amoako, aged 19; Michael Odame, aged 17; Dennis Johnson, aged 18; Simon Osei Owusu, aged 23; Jaminu Adamu, aged 23; Jattey Awattey, aged 34; Eric Asante, aged 25; Bismark Nkrumah, aged 23.
Issah Ibrahim, aged 22; Francis Agura, aged 44; Annie Moses, aged 37; Savage Osei, aged 23; Gideon Ayeko, aged 25; William Acquah, aged 30; Fred Sarpong, aged 25; Kingsley Sarpong, aged 20; Razak Seidu, aged 20; Nastalari Darko, aged 19; Samuel Kabinu, aged 27; Darlington Asuma, aged 23.
