The suspects
The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of the Chief of Yidani, Naa Ntimla Nwenisim, and his son, Ntimla Bilaga, at Yidani in the Gushegu District of the Northern Region.
The suspects, identified as Majejiba Magne, 25, and Haruna Nlegle, 34, were arrested while travelling from Dombine in the Gushegu District towards Chereponi.
In a statement signed by the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, the Command said the arrest was made by the Chereponi District Police Command.
He said following the arrest, a team from Gushegu proceeded to Chereponi and brought the suspects to the Yendi Divisional Command.
He said the suspects have since been remanded into police custody to assist with investigations.
Murder
According to police, at about 3:00 a.m. on August 14, 2026, they received information that three unidentified armed men had attacked the residence of the chief and shot him and his son.
Police personnel immediately proceeded to Yidani, secured the scene and commenced investigations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the assailants entered the compound and demanded to be directed to the chief’s room.
When their demand was refused, they fired a shot into the roof of a nearby room before forcing their way into the chief’s room, where they shot the two victims.
Police recovered five empty BB cartridges from the scene as exhibits.
The bodies were conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for preservation and post-mortem examination.
A post-mortem examination conducted on August 17 by a pathologist at the hospital indicated that both deceased suffered multiple injuries consistent with shotgun assault and died from severe injuries and haemorrhagic shock.
DCOP Lavoe said investigations are ongoing and all leads are being pursued to establish the full circumstances and arrest any other persons involved.
He appealed to residents of Yidani, Dombine, Gushegu, Chereponi and surrounding communities to provide credible information, assuring confidentiality.
He further urged the bereaved family, youth and residents to remain calm and refrain from reprisal attacks or vigilantism, warning that anyone found culpable would be dealt with according to law.
