Former Trade Minister Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has stated that the opposition NDC needs to put in more effort than just hoping to capitalize on the shortfalls of the governing NPP as a tool to capture power come 2020.
The former NDC vice Chairman who was speaking on TV3 New Day said the NDC ought to properly plan and pay attention to happenings on the ground to be able to stand on its feet to return to power in the next general elections.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah stated that Ghanaians would want to know what the NDC has to offer rather than what the NPP failed to do.
“For NDC to win, it is not for many to be looking at the failures of the NPP and to think that Ghanaians will just get disappointed and frustrated with the NPP and turn that NDC where are you?” Dr. Spio-Garbrah stated.
According to the former Trade and Industry Minister, the NDC ought to investigate and explore the reason why almost one million of its members did not vote for the party in 2016.
“I am not sure we have sufficiently addressed that, the kind of slogans and messages we had, I am not sure we have addressed that,” he stated.
He further added, “Collation of results on election day which collapsed totally under the last leadership at the last election has not been adequately addressed.”
Dr. Spio-Garbrah also said allegations and perceptions of corruption against the NDC government have not been addressed.
The former minister further noted that there are a number of issues that require the party addressedy to present a breath of fresh air to the people of Ghana.
“We need new messages to bring to the people of Ghana, because our last message was on what we had done and the NPP beat us with wonderful slogans,” he emphasized.
He also reiterated the need for the NDC to ensure that no action of the party is misconstrued as an abuse of its supporters.
This, he said, is as a result of concerns by some party supporters that the leadership of the NDC is biased towards certain candidates who are believed to be the party’s favourite.
The former Trade Minister said every party member’s contribution is relevant to the growth and victory of the NDC.
“A 1% popularity by somebody is an important figure that can change or swing an election result. So, it is in the interest of the entire party to support anybody who has any degree of support.”
According to Dr. Spio-Garbrah, one cannot tell what somebody’s following is when the level of following hasn’t been tested.
