The United States Government has presented 27 agriculture volunteers to the Peace Corps Ghana at a brief swearing-in ceremony held at the envoy’s residence in Accra.

Anthony Ziniel, Logistics Coordinator for US Peace Corps, in his remarks yesterday, indicated that the volunteers, who arrived in the country in October, this year, were taken through 11 weeks of pre-service orientation.

They were educated on techniques, local language development, culture, safety and security.

He added that they were also taken through the various laws of the country and communities.

Mr Ziniel, who congratulated the volunteers and their parents, urged them to exhibit professionalism and resilience throughout the period of their service.

Robert Jackson, Head of Missions in Ghana, who paid glowing tribute to the volunteers, mentioned that the current volunteers are part of approximately 5,000 Americans who have served as Peace Corps Volunteers in Ghana over the last 56 years.

“As Peace Corps Volunteers, you are among the best and brightest that the United States has to offer, while you are here, you will serve as grassroots ambassadors working diligently in your communities to touch lives in unimaginable ways,” he stated.

The Head of Missions therefore stressed the need for the volunteers to show commitment to working with their Ghanaian counterparts across the country.

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, George Oduro, expressed appreciation to the United States Government for the deployment of the volunteers to serve in the agricultural sector of the country’s economy.

He recounted the history of Peace Corps in the country and averred that Ghana owes a debt of gratitude to the US government for the annual deployment of volunteers.

“Your ability to learn the local languages of the various communities where you are deployed will enhance your security and involvement with the locals,” Mr Oduro indicated.
