280 Unregistered Motorbikes Seized

The Amasaman Divisional Police Command in Accra has undertaken a special operation to clamp down on suspected criminals who reportedly use unregistered motorbikes to commit various crimes.

The operation, led by Chief Superintendent Francis Yiribaare, the divisional commander, culminated in the seizure of 100 unregistered motorbikes as well as two tricycles.

Additional 180 motorbikes were seized at the Cantonments area.

The operation, carried out by about 60 police personnel from the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, went through areas like Ashalaja, Adjen Kotoku, Samsam, Amomole and Treba.

Chief Superintendent Yiribaare said in an interview that most criminals hiding in the aforementioned areas use unregistered motorbikes in their operations and so makes it difficult for the police to trace them.

Most of the crime cases recorded showed that the suspects often used unregistered motorbikes in their operations and so the police want to make sure that motorbikes are duly registered and properly documented.

He revealed that owners of the impounded motorbikes were given the chance to report to the police with the documents covering the vehicles, but none showed up.

“We shall continue to organize such exercises to free the areas of criminal activities,” Chief Superintendent Yiribaare assured.

In the course of the operation, 22-year-old Inusah Abass, a rider, was arrested allegedly transporting some quantities of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp to a client.

He has been detained while the police continue with investigation into the case.

ASP Efia Tenge, the Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, told this paper that some of the owners of the motorbikes were sent to court and fined GH¢720.
