KUMASI STANDS STILL FOR NANA

THERE WAS massive vehicular and human traffic in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, when President Akufo-Addo was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential elections on Wednesday evening.

The Electoral Commission (EC) Boss, Jean Mensa, announced the winner of the closely-contested presidential elections around 6:00pm, when most of the people in the boisterous city were closing from their workplaces.

In what looked like a planned celebration, the excited residents of Kumasi, which is the stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), unanimously rushed into the major streets in the city, thereby causing massive vehicular and human traffic.

The vehicular traffic mostly occurred at Adum, the central business district (CBD), where most of the shops and some public institutions are located. Within minutes, all the roads in the busy area were flooded with jubilant NPP supporters.

Some converged on the main Prempeh II to the Agyekum Building road, which is one of the busy roads in the city, where they danced to celebrate the ‘sweet’ victory.

According to reports, similar incident happened at other suburbs in Kumasi like Asafo, Bantama, Krofrom, Dichemso, Santase, Abuakwa, Kronum, Breman, Tafo, Atonsu, Ahensan, Ash Town and Tech among others.

Roads Blocked

Reports indicated that the presence of the excited people in the streets virtually caused blockages on major roads as the movement of vehicles were impeded in the process. The affected drivers even joined the jubilations.

Bantama Jams

The famous Bantama high street in the constituency, where the Deputy Chief of Staff, Francis Asenso Boakye, won, was also filled by excited people, who were clad in the red, white and blue colours of the NPP as they celebrated the party’s electoral victory.

All the drinking bars at Bantama, according to reports, made brisk business as people consumed bottles of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages as a sign of showing their delight over the NPP’s victory.

Eye witnesses said the number of people that converged on the main Bantama high street on Wednesday had not been seen in the city for a very long time.

Radio Jams

Also, a number of radio stations in Kumasi played victory songs on their network to entertain the crowd. For instance, Wontumi Radio/TV, used its premises at Asokwa to organize a hurriedly arranged jams for the people.

According to reports, scores of jubilant people rushed to the aforementioned radio station, where they continually danced to NPP victory songs deep in the night.

Even on Thursday morning, the NPP victory jubilations were still ongoing in the city. Most of the people were seen dressed in the party’s paraphernalia even as they headed to their various workplaces in the city.
