3 Cops Arrested

COP Ken Yeboah

Three policemen in the Ashanti Region have been detained by the regional command for negligence and their role in the jailbreak by two convicted prisoners.

The cops are Chief Inspector Kennedy Kwame Nyanteh, Inspector William Armah and Detective Sergeant Kyei Mensah, stationed at the Twedie Police Station, Regional Visibility Unit and the Ashanti Central CID respectively.

Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Ken Yeboah, said the officers were arrested on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, for their roles in the escape of Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh and Fredrick Asante.

According to him, Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh and Fredrick Asante were convicted for robbery and given 11 and 10 years respectively in hard labour by the KMA Circuit Court in Kumasi on October 12, 2017. But had since not been sent to prison to begin their sentences.

In a news release to the media, the police chief said Detective Sergeant Kyei Mensah, an investigator of the case, aided the escape of the duo after taking GH?10,000 from the other two police officers, who happen to be the parents of the convicted prisoners.

The statement indicated that D/Sgt. Mensah admitted he freed the two convicts after taking the money from C/Inspector Kennedy Kwame Nyanteh of the Twedie Police Station and Inspector William Armah of the Visibility Unit.

It added that the officers accused had also admitted influencing the young police detective with the said GH?10,000 during police interrogations, following their arrest.

All the three officers remained in police custody, assisting with an internal investigation to establish how the whole scheme was planned and executed.

One of the convicts, Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh, 33, was re-arrested yesterday by the Regional Police Command; while every effort is being made to locate Fredrick Asante, a 28-year-old man.

COP Yeboah said the command had constituted a team to delve into all convicted cases to establish whether all convicts were taken to prison or otherwise.

The commander reassured members of the public of the command’s determination to rid the Service of the bad nuts, asserting that his outfit would not countenance or protect officers who involve themselves in actions that seek to tarnish the image of the Ghana Police Service.
