KILLED! Ruth Ama Eshun
A THIRD teenage suspect has appeared before a Sunyani Magistrate Court in connection with the murder of a 58-year-old cobbler.
Derrick Opoku, 18, an undertaker, was arrested from his hideout at Yawhima, a suburb of the Sunyani municipality in the Bono Region.
Already, two others — Bismarck Adjei aka Junior, 18, who is also an undertaker and Gideon Baah aka Daa John, 19, a carpenter — are facing two provisional counts of conspiracy and murder over the death of Kwabena Awusi at Sunyani Area Two.
The three suspects have been remanded by the court presided over by Fred Obikyere until February 25 to enable the police to continue to investigate the matter.
Per police account, Derrick Opoku managed to escape when Bismarck Adjei and Gideon Baah were arrested over the murder.
Prosecuting, Inspector E. T. Addo told the court that a labourer reported the suspects and the deceased who resided in the same area at Sunyani Area Two to the police.
He told the court that on the night of 17th January 2020, at about 2 am, the labourer and Awusi slept in the open and the complainant said he heard an unusual noise and when he checked it was Bismark who was strangling Awusi.
The prosecutor said the labourer then raised the alarm and saw Bismark and Gideon taking to their heels. He said when some residents came to the scene they found Awusi lying dead with multiple wounds on the neck and shoulder.
The prosecutor further informed the court that about 30 minutes later the complainant spotted Bismark at the same Area Two and observed blood stains in his yellow and black round neck shirt.
He raised the alarm again and the suspect was arrested and sent to Sunyani municipal police station.
He said the second suspect, Gideon, was later arrested from his hideout at the same vicinity and added that a search in his room revealed a blood-stained machete slightly washed.
He said the machete and the round neck shirt had been sent to the police forensics laboratory in Accra for analysis.
