4 Arrested Over Slain Cop

Late Corporal Bernard Anwti

Police in the Ashanti Region arrested four persons on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Corporal Bernard Antwi of Manso Nkwanta District Police Command.

The suspects – including two females – were detained on suspicion of being involved in the commission of the dastardly act which occurred on Monday evening at Manso Abodom in the Amansie West District.

Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander ACP David Agyemang Adjem told the media at a press briefing yesterday that “efforts are underway to get other persons who have been implicated in the murder to assist in police investigation.”

Cpl. Antwi, 37, was on board a vehicle with some Chinese nationals from Manso Dome to Antoakrom when the armed men attacked them on the outskirts of Abodom around 5:30 p.m. He was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene before being taken to the morgue of St. Martin Hospital at Agroyesum, DAILY GUIDE gathered.

Cpl. Antwi, an old hand of the mining community, was allegedly escorting the Chinese miners from a mining site at Manso Dome when the tragic incident occurred.

Witnesses told the paper that the gangsters, who numbered more than four, crossed the vehicle of the victim and his cohorts, and opened fire on them.

According to sources, the police officer was on duty at the main police barrier at Manso Agroyesum road when he was called to escort the Chinese miners from the galamsey site to Antoakrom.

Witnesses said the gunmen quickly fled the scene after committing the dastardly act, but could not tell whether they took away anything. Investigations are underway.

“The IGP, Police Administration and the Regional Police Command extend their condolences to the bereaved families,” ACP Adjem concluded.
