Fifty aspirants have officially entered the race for the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national officer positions after picking nomination forms ahead of the party’s October 3 elections.
Among them are four aspirants who have picked nomination forms to contest the General Secretary position by the close of nominations on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
They are the incumbent General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong; former Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi; former MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom, Sylvester Tetteh; and former NPP Director of Finance and Administration, Charles Dwamena.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the Chairman of the NPP National Officers Election Committee, Frederick Opare Ansah, the committee described the nomination process as successful.
It said the level of interest demonstrated by party members reflected their commitment to the future of the party.
The General Secretary contest is one of several keenly contested positions in the upcoming elections, with the National Vice Chairperson position attracting the highest number of aspirants.
Thirteen candidates picked forms for the Vice Chairperson position. They are Henry Nana Boakye, Kojo Fosu Boadu, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Samuel Pyne, the party’s Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, Abena Pokua Boaitey Amoah, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, Yaa Amponsah Frimpong, George Kwabena Abankwah Yeboah, Horma Miezah, Richard Oti Aboagye, Bright Esselfie Kumi and Nana Akomea.
The National Chairperson position has also attracted five aspirants, including former Chairman Paul Afoko, former General Secretary John Boadu, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, former National Vice Chairman Sammy Crabbe and former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
For the National Treasurer position, four aspirants picked nomination forms. They are Alfred Kojo Thompson, Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah, Tahiru Issahaku Moomin and Ahmed Ruka Saida.
The National Organiser position has attracted eight aspirants: Glover Daniel Nii Kwartei, Salam Mustapha, Kwame Prempeh, Archibald Korletey Gamor, Emmanuel Korsi Bodja, Nana Kwadjo Agyei Yeboah, Daniel Agyenim Boateng and Ali Maiga Halidu.
Three aspirants are seeking the National Women Organiser position. They are former Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, Perpetual Ekua Lomokie Akwada and Safia Mohammed.
The National Youth Organiser position has attracted six aspirants. They are Clement Opoku Gyamfi, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Michael Osei Boateng, Vera Oye Bram-Larbi, Kumi Alfred Ababio and Abanga Fuseini Yakubu.
Five aspirants have also picked forms to contest the National Nasara Organiser position. They are Issaka Muazo Kunata, Salim Bamba, Razak Tahiru Maiga, Awal Mohammed and Mohammed Ali Suraj.
The National Communications Director position has two aspirants, namely Dennis Miracles Aboagye, former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation and former Communications Director of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, and Evans Kodom.
Vetting Ahead
The NPP National Officers Election Committee, however, cautioned that the purchase or collection of nomination forms did not automatically make an aspirant a valid candidate.
It explained that an aspirant would become a nominee only after successfully filing completed nomination forms and submitting all required documentation within the stipulated period.
The nominees would subsequently be subjected to vetting and other processes prescribed by the party’s constitution and applicable election regulations.
The filing of completed nomination forms begins on Sunday, August 23, and ends on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Vetting is scheduled to take place from Monday, August 31 to Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The committee said it had not yet announced a date for balloting because it wanted the filing, vetting and possible appeals processes to be completed before fixing a final date.
“The final composition of the field of candidates of the various positions can only be established after vetting and the determination of any appeals arising from that process,” it stressed.
The committee explained that fixing a date prematurely could result in postponements if unresolved appeals affected the final list of candidates.
It said previous elections had shown that where an aspirant was involved in an appeal concerning qualification, the party might have to wait for the final determination before proceeding with balloting.
The committee assured aspirants and party members that the eventual balloting process would be transparent, fair and conducted on an equal basis.
It also urged all aspirants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns in a manner that promoted unity, mutual respect and confidence in the party’s internal democratic processes.
The committee reiterated the NPP’s commitment to conducting the 2026 National Officers Elections fairly and transparently, in accordance with the party’s constitution and election regulations.
It said all aspirants would be given adequate notice of the date, time, venue and procedure for balloting once the date was fixed.
