Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, announced that six of the ten Youth Resource Centres being built across the country are now ready for commissioning.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo would visit Koforidua on December 28, 2023, to commission the Koforidua Sports Stadium, which is one of the Youth Resource Centres.
The Minister made the announcement while moving a motion in Parliament, asking the House to approve GH¢195,795,973 for the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ services for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024.
At the grassroots level, Mr. Ussif said the government is also ensuring that sports facilities are provided for the grassroots sport development, adding that, “Almost 154 Astroturf facilities have been constructed across the country. We have provided currently the biggest aquatic centre in Africa with a 10-named competition pool, eight-named warm-up pool. We have also constructed a 1,000-seater multi-purpose hall, which will be used for other indoor games such as basketball and boxing,” he stated.
“We are constructing currently and the contractors are about to hand over this month, five tennis courts and one of them covered with 1,000-seater capacity,” he added.
The Minister also stated that the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, which began in 2007, has been modified and is nearing completion.
He noted that, what is important in the facilities that they are providing is that they satisfy international standards, allowing Ghana to host the games, and in the future, any event, whether athletic or whatever game.
“Because we have asked the constructors and the federations to ensure that all the facilities are satisfied by the international bodies,” he stated.
