7 Arrested For Attacking Tema Police Station

SEVEN PERSONS have been apprehended in Tema for allegedly attacking the police station there with dangerous weapons.

The culprits were said to have besieged the police station together with others clad in red, to express their displeasure over the murder of their relation and friend, 30-year-old Patrick Mensah Agbenyo, a dock labourer at the Tema Port.

The arrested youth have been sent to the Tema Regional Police Command for further investigations. Some officers were reported to have been injured in the process and properties of the police damaged.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Benefo Darkwa, who confirmed the arrest in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, explained that the suspects attacked police officers on duty and pelted them with stones and other lethal weapons.

“This morning started what is called jama by singing and drumming around the police station. Initially we thought they were not coming to the police station but they later started throwing stones and other missiles towards the police,” he stated.

According to him, the station commander called for reinforcement and some of the attackers were arrested.

Some of the youth told DAILY GUIDE that they were attacking the police to register their protest over the death of their lost one.

Meanwhile, the family of a 30-year-old man who was shot and killed by the police at Tema New Town has served notice that it is proceeding to court to seek justice.

According to the family, a suit will be served the police administration to explain the circumstance under which the breadwinner was murdered.

An autopsy report on the deceased indicated that he died of hemorrhagic shock, severe neck and chest injury and gun shot at close range.

Mr. William Attippoe, head of the family, said the family had received the autopsy report and would initiate a court action against the Ghana Police Service since the deceased was killed unlawfully.

He stated, We are going to court on the charges of defamation, manslaughter and also seek compensation. Those police officers in question should be questioned and dealt with. The police should also constitute a disciplinary committee to look into the matter and ensure justice.”
