Police personnel of the highway patrol teams from Wa in the Upper West Region and the Bole District of the Northern Region shot and killed one of the suspected armed robbers who allegedly terrorized residents on Monday at Nuoyiri, near Banda Nkwanta.
Reports said that the police boarded a commercial vehicle with some market women prior to the operation.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that three suspected armed robbers suddenly crossed the vehicle and fired shots to force the driver to stop.
The police in the vehicle also returned fire, killing one of the suspected robbers who were wielding locally manufactured guns.
The other two fled into a nearby bush when they realized that they had been overpowered by the police.
A trader, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE on condition of anonymity said, “I really thought it was a dream my brother, It looked like the movies we watch on TV, because I saw police and armed robbers exchanging fire but by God’s grace, we were saved by the police and I thank them for that.”
The Bole District Police Commander, ASP Dogbatse Azumah, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, indicated that the operation was a collaboration between the Wa Highway patrol team and their Bole counterparts.
According to him, the police retrieved a locally manufactured gun and three cartridges from the dead suspect, adding that he looked like a Fulani.
He appealed to hospitals, clinics and herbal centres to be on the lookout for persons with injuries who come to their facilities for treatment.
“They should report any strange person at their health facilities to the nearest police station.
“The patrol team is still on the highway pursuing the armed robbers who fled as well as escorting passengers.”
The body of the deceased has since been conveyed to the Bole Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
