Rape Cases Top Chart In Asesewa

The number of defilement, rape and assault cases are soaring on daily basis in the Upper Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region as compared to criminal cases, Asesewa Police Commander, Superintendent Stephen Kofi Ahiatafu, has disclosed.

According to him, the situation cannot be attributed to poverty but rather lack of proper parental guidance that was forcing some young girls into bad companies resulting in them being abused sexually.

He mentioned that the incessant telecasting of nude and sex scenes on screens nowadays are having negative influences on the youth, adding that there should be more sex education in schools that would help the youth to know the dangers associated with teenage pregnancy, child marriage and pre-marital sex.

Addressing a gathering of police officers, department heads and the residents during the annual WASSA get-together at Asesewa over the weekend, Supt Ahiatafu expressed worry about the menace, calling for quick intervention to curb the situation.

He called on parents to continue providing for their children, especially the girls to prevent them from seeking financial support from men who may end up abusing them sexually.

The police chief bemoaned the deplorable state of the entire Asesewa District Police Headquarters block and the barracks. The lack of access to potable water, he mentioned, is one of the challenges being faced by security personnel and their families in the district.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper Manya Krobo, Jeff Tetteh Kavianu, the guest of honour for the occasion, called on the police administration to be more professional, non-partisan and unbiased in the discharge of their duties.
