Afoley Backs Out of Krowor Debate

The three candidates at the event

Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Krowor Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, on Saturday failed to show up for a town hall debate for parliamentary candidates in the area.

She was said to have agreed to take part in the debate but chickened out at the last minute for unknown reasons.

The debate, held at the Ebenezer Methodist Church at Nungua in Accra, was organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) with support from the Coalition for Domestic Elections Observers (CODEO) and the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana).

It was aimed at providing a platform for the parliamentary contenders contesting in this year’s election to outline their vision and policies to address problems in order to make the campaign issues-based.

In attendance were the Convention People’s Party (CPP) candidate, Fanny Amartey, Hugo Kofi Huppenbauer, Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Agnes Naa Momo Lartey of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Meanwhile, the parliamentary aspirant has failed to issue an official statement to disclose reasons for her withdrawal from the debate.

Rev. Fred Deegbe, Member of the CODEO Advisory Board, told the media after the debate that Mrs Afoley Quaye missed a great opportunity to propagate her message to the electorate.

According to him, he was surprised that Mrs. Afoley did not turn up for the important event.

He said that some of the electorate do not understand the work of Member of Parliament (MP).

Rev. Deegbe expressed happiness with the way in which the electorate and the candidates comported themselves during the programme, saying that “this forum has helped deepened democracy in Ghana.”

He was optimistic the electorate would vote for the best candidate that has sound policies.

The incumbent MP Dr. Nii Oakley Quaye Kumah for Krowor Seat, has been bedridden for over year and so the NDC selected Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.
