Political parties suspending their campaigns in Ashanti

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have suspended their political campaigns in the Ashanti region with immediate effect to mourn the death of Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem.

The move by the political parties is also to show respect to Asanteman.

At separate press conferences in Kumasi on Friday, the two largest political parties stated that the Asantehemaa’s demise is a great blow to them, hence their decision to mourn her death.

The NDC were the first to organize a press conference at the Golden Bean Hotel minutes after the party’s leaders visited the Manhyia Palace to console Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

Andy Osei Okrah, the NDC Campaign Coordinator for Ashanti region, told DAILY GUIDE that the NDC had cancelled its intended health walk in Kumasi on Saturday, which was expected to be attended by President John Mahama.

He said all other NDC campaign activities in the region had been suspended and that the party would make a decision after the one-week celebration of Nana Afia Kobi, who died on Monday at the age of 111.

NDC stalwarts such as Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Koku Anyidoho, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Kwaku Boahen, Francis Dodovi and others were present.

Addressing the media at the NPP Regional Office, Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka ‘Wontumi’, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, said the death of Asantehemaa is a great blow to the NPP.

Wontumi said Nana Akufo-Addo, the NPP presidential candidate, sent a powerful delegation to console Otumfuo on Thursday, adding that the NPP would actively partake in the funeral of Nana Afia Kobi.
