The Minister-designate for Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has given firm assurance to the leaders of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) that the payment of the allowances of teacher and nurse trainees would be captured in the first budget of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh gave the assurance when members of NUGS, led by the president, Luqman Abubakari, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Parliament on Friday to congratulate him and also present some of the challenges facing Ghanaian students in the country.

Dr Opoku Prempeh therefore asked heads of the training institutions to submit the right records of all students who are to receive the allowances, stressing that “any head who will provide wrong information will be severely punished when caught.”

He said all the appropriate checks will be put in place to avoid the situation whereby certain people would take advantage to unduly benefit from the system.

He said under his tenure as the Minister for Education, he would take a second look at the 25% corporate tax being paid by private universities.
He also told the NUGS executive members that he would strongly push for the Government Scholarship Secretariat to be brought under the Ministry of Education so that the right people in need of government scholarship will benefit.

The NUGS executives were happy with the assurances given by the Minister-designate for Education and promised to fully support him to give off his best to enhance education in the country.

“We trust Dr Opoku Prempeh to deliver on his promise so we entreat all students to have faith in the present leadership of NUGS,” Luqman Abubakari told DAILY GUIDE.
