2 Ex-Convicts Arrested For Robbing Phone Shop

The two suspects after they were arrested

Two armed robbers, who were recently released from the Nsawam Medium Prisons after serving jail terms for criminal offences, have been arrested again at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region by the Tema Regional Police Command for allegedly attempting to steal mobile phones from a shop.

The ex-convicts, who specialize in cutting containers, are Cudjoe Boamah, 26, and Nicholas Tetteh, 23.

They were both sentenced by the court on February 23, 2013 for unlawful entry and stealing.

A locally manufactured pistol, AA live ammunition, a cutter, dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp and torchlight were retrieved from the suspects by the police.

Two cylinders with a metering gauge, which the suspects allegedly used to melt the metal and cut through containers were also found at the crime scene.

Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Regional Police Command, narrated that on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at about 1am, the suspects attempted to break into the phone shop to steal phones at Afienya.

She explained that “the shop owner was advised by police to fortify the container to curtail the theft of his property. He fortified the container by electrifying the container whenever he closes.”

According to her, the ex-convicts, who failed to cut the container, decided to gain access to the container through the roof.

“They climbed onto the roof and created an opening only to realize that the container was impregnable because it had been barricaded electronically,” she disclosed.

While they were busily trying to find other means of getting into the container, ASP Obeng said the police had information about their activities.

She mentioned that the police quickly rushed to the scene where they met the suspects and subsequently arrested them.

According to the police spokeswoman, the suspects immediately admitted the offence and claimed ownership of the implements.

“The suspects said they were five in number but could not tell where the remaining three were. They are currently in police custody assisting in investigations,” she said.
