Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah has sternly cautioned assembly members to be circumspect in their utterances and also shun rumour mongering to help maintain peace and unity in the country.
He admonished assembly members to always adhere to the various communication channels in the assemblies to address their grievances, stressing that rumour mongering can lead to deep cracks in the assemblies.
“Honourable members of this august House, we must do well to eschew rumour mongering. There are channels of communication in any bureaucracy and that must be respected.
If you want facts and clarification on any issue please contact the appropriate quarters and refrain from using the media to peddle rumours or churn out untruths to the public.
This situation has the tendency to erode the confidence the public has in the assemblies and create credibility issues,” the Ashanti regional minister told the assembly members.
He disclosed this while speaking at the opening of a three-day training workshop for members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) at the True Vine Hotel at Nyiaeso in Kumasi on Wednesday.
The programme, among others, seeks to help members of the House to stay abreast with the Local Governance Act 2016, Act 936, which was passed in 2016 and amended this year.
The assembly members would also be educated on the Public Finance Management Act 2016, Act 921 during the three-day workshop.
Hon Osei Mensah entreated assembly members and public officials to constantly upgrade themselves in order not to be left behind in this fast changing technological world.
Facilitators of the workshop were Dr Eric Oduro Osae, Dean, Institute of Local Government Studies; Frederick Agyarko Oduro, Head of Department for Urban and Environmental Management, Institute of Local Government Studies, and Gladys Tetteh, former Presiding Member of Adentan Municipal Assembly and a Local Government expert.
