TTH Expireed Drugs Found

Expired drugs belonging to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have been found in a rented apartment in Tamale in the Northern Region.

DAILY GUIDE understands that the drugs were transported outside the facility to create space for ongoing rehabilitation works at the hospital.

It was the decision of management of the hospital to relocate the expired drugs and not the past pharmacist, one Godwin Ayamga, as being alleged.

Some staff members of the hospital who spoke to DAILY GUIDE on condition of anonymity said even though the last time expired drugs were destroyed by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) was in 2009, the subsequent expired drugs had been audited and sent to the location outside the facility.

According to them, a board of survey was constituted, supervised by the Food and Drugs Board (FDA) per the law to audit the drugs before moving it and after the process, a report was handed over to the management of the hospital.

DAILY GUIDE visited the apartment with Godwin Ayamga and some staff of the hospital to ascertain the truth for themselves.

Mr Ayamga pointed out that he is a professional and would never have unlawfully kept the hospital’s property because that could tarnish his hard-earned reputation.

He indicated that a report was signed and handed over to management and so he did not understand why someone would claim that he never handed over the expired drugs to the hospital.

“The place where the expired drugs are located was rented by the hospital and not my personal apartment,” he stressed

The rented apartment where the drugs are kept is posing health danger to tenants of the house, and it is recommended that the hospital should dispose the drugs of as soon as possible because of the toxic nature of the expired drugs.

Tenants at the rented house have expressed worry and are appealing to the authorities of the hospital to do away with the drugs to help save lives.
