Police Fret Over Chieftaincy Disputes

DCOP Kwasi Duku

The Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwasi Duku has bemoaned the chieftaincy disputes which continue to bedevil the region.

He mentioned the chieftaincy dispute in the Sefwi Bekwai Traditional area and other areas across the region.

To this end, he has appealed to the Regional House of Chiefs and the various courts to expedite action on some of the chieftaincy matters before them to help avoid unnecessary conflicts.

He also admonished all interested parties in chieftaincy disputes in the Region, to use the appropriate channels in resolving the issues.

“Any untoward approach to achieve their aim will not be tolerated. Operational men from SWAT and RDF in Takoradi are on the grounds to provide security”.

The regional police boss also expressed concern about the activities of illegal miners also called ‘galamsey operators’ which had been on the increase in the Western Region and other parts of the country.

“Their activities have caused considerable damage to the environment as well as polluting the water bodies in the region”.

“Though, there have been warnings and joint police and military operations to clamp down on the activities of these illegal miners, whose actions gradually degrade the environment, the menace still persists”.

DCOP Duku disclosed that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) would continue to organize operations to flush out the ‘galamsey’ operations from the areas they are operating in.

DCOP Duku noted that the mandate of the Ghana Police Service could not be accomplished without the support of the media.

“I therefore crave your support in all endeavours of the police to ensure that the region becomes one of the most peaceful in the country. But we will welcome all constructive criticisms from the media”, he told the journalists.

He urged the media not to hesitate to consult the police for confirmation or otherwise of issues pertaining to security before going public.

He was very hopeful that residents in the region would continue to be law abiding and work together to improve on the level of security in the area.
