Trader Arrested for Assaulting Toddler

Aku Korshie in police custody

The Ministries branch of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) has apprehended a 45-year-old trader for allegedly subjecting her three-year-old nephew to torture for begging for food from a neigbour.

The suspect, identified as Aku Korshie, according to neighbours, repeatedly beat the toddler at the least provocation.

The victim had marks on the genitals and other parts of the body.

Some women, including DOVVSU personnel at the police station, wept uncontrollably when the toddler’s cloths were removed to reveal the wounds.

The father of the little boy, Ofoe Atsu, who could not hold back his tears, hurled insults at his sister for maltreating his only son.

DSP Phyllis Osei, Regional Coordinator of the Ministries Branch of DOVVUSU, immediately ordered the detention of Korshie.

The victim was sent to the police hospital for treatment.

Narrating the incident to DAILY GUIDE, the regional coordinator, said the complainant in the case is a baker who lives at Agbogbloshie with the suspect and victim.

In January, this year, the suspect brought the victim from their hometown at Kajadornya, near Ada in the Greater Accra Region to live with her.

“The victim, according to our information, is often denied food by suspect which forces the boy to go out to beg neighbours for food at times.”

The Regional Coordinator said neighbours on several occasions asked the suspect to desist from beating the victim but she took offence.

On May 1, 2017, the victim, who was very hungry, went to one of the tenants to beg for food.

Suspect Korshie, upon seeing this, hit the little boy severely with a piece of wood, compelling the neigbour to report the matter to the police.

Meanwhile, Korshie has been charged with denying the victim of food, water and subjecting him to inhumane treatment.

DSP Phyllis averred that “we are alarmed of the grievous harm to the innocent toddler and I will appeal to the public to report any maltreatment against any child to the police.”

Individuals can call the crime fighters numbers MTN and Vodafone 18555 to report such cases to the police.
