Kenyan JCE Arrive in Ghana

Justice Atuguba in a meeting with the other judges

A 12-member delegation of the Judicial Committee on Elections (JCE) in Kenya has arrived in Ghana to gain useful insights into the resolution of electoral disputes.

The delegation, led by Philomena Mwilui, the Deputy Chief Justice and Vice President of the Constitutional Court, comprises judges of the Kenyan Supreme, Appeal and High Courts.

Kenya is preparing for its second general elections on August 8, 2017 since the adoption of its new constitution.

They would use the visit to focus on Ghana’s election dispute resolution mechanism, including legislative and administrative frameworks to generate and document lessons that the Kenyan Judiciary could adopt for its 2017 elections.

Receiving the delegation in Accra yesterday, Justice Victor Jones Doste, Chairman of the Election Adjudication Task Force Committee, said the visit was important because it would afford both parties the opportunity to learn from each other.

Justice Mwilu, on her part, was full of praise for the Ghanaian judiciary, stressing its key role in the successful conduct of the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Earlier, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Georgina Theodora Wood, the outgoing Chief Justice before holding a closed door meeting with some justices of the Supreme Ghana, chaired by Justice William Atuguba and facilitated by Justice Dotse.
