Six persons were killed instantly in an accident that occurred at Wansema Camp on the Samreboi-Mumuni road in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region on Wednesday at about 7:00 pm.
According to sources, the accident happened when a Kia Rhino truck with registration number AS 8721-10 carrying passengers – mostly market women and their goods – went into a ditch, killing the passengers instantly.
ASP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer who confirmed the accident, revealed that those who lost their lives included five females and a male.
She indicated that eight other passengers sustained various degrees of injury and are currently responding to treatment at Samartex Hospital, Samreboi.
She noted that investigations so far conducted indicated that the truck carrying the passengers and goods and moving from Mumuni Camp to Wassa Akropong was being driven by one Kofi Jesse, now at large.
On reaching a section of the road at Wansema Camp near Samreboi where a road construction was taking place, the driver reportedly attempted to use a diversion created by the contractor.
In the process, the vehicle slipped into a gutter being rehabilitated and the vehicle somersaulted into a nearby stream.
“Five females and one male on board the truck were trapped and died instantly. Eight of the passengers on board were also seriously injured,” she pointed out.
ASP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku indicated that the bodies of the deceased persons had been deposited at the Enchi Government Hospital awaiting autopsy and identification.
The injured ones, she said, had been admitted at the Samartex Hospital and that they were responding to treatment.
