Kingdom Books Warehouse Gutted

Fire Service personnel fighting the fire

FIRE HAS destroyed the main warehouse of Kingdom Books and Stationery Limited located at Miotso, a suburb of Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.

The inferno, which started early Sunday morning, ravaged the granary of the leading company in the distribution and retailing of office essentials.

It took fire personnel many hours before they could bring the wild blaze under control.

A total of eight fire tenders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other privately owned ones were at the scene to help extinguish the fire.

Five private water tankers also assisted the Fire Service with water to help quickly bring the situation under control.

Winfred Lartey, a security guard on duty, told DAILY GUIDE that the fire might have been started by an electrical fault.

According to him, all attempts to reach the GNFS were unsuccessful as a colleague had to rush to the offices of the GNFS at the Prampram plant to alert of the incident.

Meanwhile, the police, fire fighters and Kingdom Books officials are investigating the cause of the fire and estimate the cost of damage.

According to the Director of Operation of the GNFS, Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO), Mr. Julius Kuunor, the personnel arrived at the scene at about 6:05 am, saying, “We realized that the fire was really alight so we had to call for other assistance.”

Touching on the challenge he and his team encountered, the Director of Operation said that getting enough water to put out the inferno was a challenge therefore had to depend on other private people.

“Subsequently what we needed was water because getting water was really a challenge so we called for other appliances and tankers,” DCFO Kuunor averred, adding that although there were water hydrants at the premises, the pressure was very low.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organsisation (NADMO) joined the fire officer as they struggled to put out the inferno and assess the situation.

Henry Quartey, the Deputy Minister of Interior, assured journalists at the scene of government’s support to the affected company.

However, when the DAILY GUIDE arrived at the scene, officials of the company, assisted by some youth in the area, were busily salvaging some properties and putting them onto trucks and vans for safe keeping.
