Chaos In Sekondi Mosque

Hell broke loose at the Sekondi Central Mosque last Thursday when some residents of Sekondi Zongo stormed the worship place and inflicted cutlass wounds on the worshipers.

This was during the Thursday prayers said by some Muslim faithful in Sekondi, who are currently fasting in the holy month of Ramadan.

It took the intervention of the police personnel, who were deployed to the place, to maintain law and order.

The cause of the attack was not immediately known, but DAILY GUIDE gathered that the chaos had to do with the struggle for leadership of the Muslims at the mosque.

According to sources, a new Imam by name Alhaji Mukadaso Ali, had been appointed to lead prayers at the mosque.

However, it seems the supporters of the former Imam could not fathom why a new Imam should be appointed.

They purportedly vowed to prevent the new Imam from operating from the mosque.

On Thursday, while Alhaji Mukadasu Ali was leading prayers at the Central Mosque, a group of people believed to be supporters of the former Imam, stormed the mosque and attacked some of the worshippers.

The names of some of the attackers were given as Balla and Kasid.

They allegedly inflicted cutlass wounds on some of the worshippers.

Later those injured were issued with police medical report forms to seek treatment and report at a later date.

ASP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), who confirmed the incident, noted that no arrests have been made.

She mentioned that some of the injured included Fuseni Moses, Nuhu Issah and Bunyamini Jebril, all of Sekondi Zongo, who sustained injuries at their back, left eyebrows and left arm respectively.

She pointed out that members of the Regional Security Council were surprised at the action of the attackers because REGSEC members held series of meetings with the two factions to maintain peace in the area.

“Because of last Thursday’s incident, armed police men were deployed to monitor the Friday Muslim prayers at the mosque.

“The prayers ended without incident. The police will continue to monitor the situation.
