The seven paramount chiefs in the northern part of the Western Region have begun consultative processes in the area over the creation of the proposed Western North Region.
The chiefs have therefore organized a series of open forums with the various municipal and district chief executives as well as opinion leaders and the people in the area over the creation of the new region.
The engagements were to explain the processes that must be followed before the said creation could take place and also to solicit the support of the people for the success of the initiative.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), ahead of the 2016 general election, promised to create a Western North Region out of the current Western Region to speed up development in that part of the region.
The seven paramount chiefs were from Sefwi Anhwiaso, Chirano, Wassa Amenfi, Sefwi Wiawso, Suaman Dadieso, Enchi Aowin and Sefwi Bekwai.
Explaining why the people needed to embrace the idea, the paramount chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi, stressed that the proposed creation of the region is to ensure a more equitable development of the region as well as address the unwieldy size of the Western Region.
According to him, the creation of the Western-North Region Is long overdue, considering the fact that a significant portion of Ghana’s natural resources, such as gold and cocoa, as well as foodstuffs, could be found in that part of the country.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi, who is also the President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, noted that the general consensus amongst the people of the region was for the creation of a separate region to allow for a more efficient governance system.
According to him, the traditional authorities are key stakeholders in the plan which government believes will help accelerate development in the western part of the country.
He entreated the chiefs and the people to support the government’s efforts for a smooth take-off of the new region.
The District Chief Executive for Aowin Enchi, Samuel Adu Gyamfi, thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the vision and asked all and sundry to fully support the move.
He pointed out that the idea of creating the Western North Region really came from the people on the ground in their quest to experience effective local governance.
