DCOP George Tuffour, Tema Regional Police Commander.
THE TEMA Regional Police Command has apprehended a supposed accomplice allegedly involved in the killing of Constable Michael Kporyie at Yellow Signboard, Michel Camp, near Tema in the Greater Accra Region.
The suspect, Razak Salifu alias Baba, was said to be a conspirator who purportedly trailed the police constable on a motorbike and shot and killed him on the Tema-Akosombo highway last week Monday.
He’s said to be under police guard at the Tema General Hospital where he is receiving medical treatment after he was shot in the leg for attempting to escape arrest.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Benefo Darkwah, spokesman for the Command who confirmed the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, explained that the suspect attempted escaping by scaling over the fence wall at his residence.
“To prevent the suspect from running away, police shot him in the leg and immediately rushed him to the Tema General Hospital for treatment,” according to him.
On Monday, June 12, 2017, at about 9:30 pm, Constable Kporyie who was detailed for ‘Motor Bike patrol’ duty at a quarry site at Shai Hills, was riding his motorbike and heading towards his duty post when he was shot dead by his assailants – whose identities were then unknown – at the Sawiz fuel station near Michel Camp.
Constable Michael’s body was subsequently found in a nearby bush in a pool of blood by a team of policemen who arrived after hearing of the incident.
Eyewitness account claimed that Constable Michael Kporyie, who was in police uniform, was seen riding a motorbike with registration number GP 4350 with an AK 47 rifle strapped to his chest.
According to the eyewitness, two men also riding a motorbike from behind him, closed in on him and suddenly started shooting him and thereafter sped off to an unknown destination.
Inspection on the body of the policeman showed multiple gun wounds on the chest and eyebrow.
One AK 47 assault rifle, pepper spray, a pair of handcuffs and a torch light were said to have been found on Michael by the police.
His body has since been deposited at the morgue of the Police Hospital in Accra for preservation and autopsy.
