Northern Region Declared Disaster Zone
The Director General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Eric Nana Agyeman-Prempeh, has officially declared the three Northern Regions as a very emergency disaster zone, with the code name, ‘Thunder Boat 2017.’
According to him, search and rescue team from Accra are expected to camp at Walewale by next week ahead of the Bakari Dam spillage.
An annex of the camp will be in Wa in the Upper West Region where some sensitization would be ongoing ahead of the spillage.
He indicated that the preparation for the spillage is a joint operation involving the Ghana Red Cross, security services and the military, specifically the 48 Engineers Regiment.
The NADMO boss revealed that camping is estimated to last for a period of three months in the region.
Following the recent flooding in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, Mr. Eric Nana Agyeman-Prempeh, together with some technical engineers, visited the region.
The visit is expected to bring together stakeholders and engineers from different sectors to come out with a formidable plan and action which will see flooding in the region become a thing of the past.
Mr. Eric Prempeh disclosed that the president had tasked them to be more preventive than reactive and that is exactly what the organization is going to do.
The three regions of the north have over the years suffered diverse degrees of flooding resulting in the death of livestock, humans and destroying properties wealth over millions of Ghana cedis during the raining seasons.
Coupled with the spillage of the Bagre dam, the region is heavily hit with perennial flooding.
The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, has called on NGOs, individuals and philanthropists to come to the aid of the affected victims.
He thanked the security personnel, chiefs and the people of Tamale for supporting NADMO in its efforts to rescue lives and properties.
