President Faure Gnassingbe
About 272 Togolese refugees have moved to Chereponi in the Northern Region following the unrest in their country.
Thousands of Togolese are protesting against the 50-year rule of the Gnassingbes and have called for the reinstatement of constitutional limit for the tenure of the president.
President Faure Gnassingbe has been in power since the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, in 2005, having been at the helm of affairs in Togo for 38 years.
The Chereponi DCE, Abdul Razak Tahidu, who confirmed the incident, said the refugees had temporarily been accommodated.
He stated that he was yet to meet with the northern regional minister to develop plans on the way forward since the influx of the Togolese was unexpected and therefore unplanned for.
According to him, Chereponi is the best and only place the refugees could go because it’s closer to Togo.
Mr Razak Tahidu gave the assurance that the refugees were safe and had the necessary basic tools to make life comfortable for them.
He urged cooperate institutions and individuals to come to their aid.
The Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization, (NADMO), Alhaji Abdallah Hindu, told DAILY GUIDE that a team had been sent to the Chereponi District.
According to him, the team would do an assessment for NADMO to know the kind of assistant it could give to the refugees.
Most of the foreigners are women with their children and other relatives.
