Damongo Agric Students Vacate School Over Alawa

Following the restoration of the much talked-about nursing and teacher trainee allowances, students of Damongo Agricultural College in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region have embarked on a sit-home strike.

According to them, the government had failed to equally restore their allowance.

The students are threatening to remain at home until their allowance is restored and paid them.

Some students said they would not return to school until the government restores their allowance, indicating that they had been betrayed by the government because before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was voted into power, it was a promise the party made to them (students) during the 2016 electioneering campaign.

According to them, they do not understand why the government can pay the nurses who have the largest population but refuse to pay students of only five agric colleges across the country.

They stated that they needed an assurance from the government that they would be paid their allowances.

When DAILY GUIDE contacted the principal of the Damongo Agric College, Robert Ayamga, he said management did all it could for the students not to go home but they did not heed their advice.

He appealed to the government to dialogue with them (students) to enable them return to school to continue their academic work.

Information gathered indicated that when students of the five agricultural colleges picketed at the sector minister’s office in Accra, he said they (agric students) were not captured in this year’s budget.

Last week the government announced the restoration of the nursing trainee allowance in line with the president’s campaign promise.

The allowance, which was scrapped by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, will see each trainee nurse receiving GH¢400 per month.
