Cuban Envoy Stretches Hand

The envoy in a handshake with A.R. Gomda at the end of the visit

The Cuban Ambassador to Ghana, Pedro Luis Despaigne Gonzalez, stretched a friendship to the people of Ghana when he paid a courtesy call on the DAILY GUIDE yesterday.

Speaking to the Chief News Editor, A.R. Gomda, he said, as an envoy he has observed the stature of the DAILY GUIDE in the country and felt the need to undertake such a visit.

DAILY GUIDE, he said, is one of the newspapers his mission subscribes because of its stature in the media landscape in the country.

The role of newspapers in shaping public opinion in any country, he observed, cannot be overlooked even in a world driven by digitalization. ‘Newspapers are managers of public opinion’ he said out of deference to newspapers.

As an envoy, he said, it is his mission to build bridges employing novelties in diplomacy. He recalled the establishment of a Cuban embassy in Ghana in 1963 and pointed at the numerous Ghanaians who have undergone studied in various disciplines in his country.

Cuba, he noted, has attracted a poutpourri of impressions all of which depend on the source of the stories. In all, however, he said, Cuba is a nice country where there is racial harmony. As a black Cuban, he spoke proudly about the cordial relationship existing between races in Cuba.

In his response, the Chief News Editor, A.R. Gomda expressed delight at the kind words from the diplomat.

The cordial relationship between the two countries dates back to the early days after independence – a bond of friendship which, he added, has grown over the years.

The two exchanged pleasantries in an interesting discussion about the Cuban salsa which the Chief News Editor said he loves with the diplomat saying he has started eating some Ghanaians dishes.

The envoy was accompanied by the First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy Julio Cesar Sanchez Martinez.
