Management of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in collaboration with GLICO Life Insurance has launched an insurance cover for all national service personnel.

Mustapha Ussif, Acting Executive Director of NSS, in an address at the NSS headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, indicated that the decision to insure all personnel was a collective decision taken by members of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) during their congress held in Kumasi in May this year.

He said national service personnel on posting to their respective job locations are exposed to a number of risks such as having to cross water bodies, incur injury, go through assault and the need for medical attention, among other forms.

According to him personnel on the insurance cover will pay a monthly premium of GH¢15 to GLICO the insurer.

Benefits

The benefits to be enjoyed by contributors are very encouraging and which are, the next of kin of an insured service personnel who dies while carrying out his or her official duties will receive from GLICO Life GH¢15, 000 while in the case of total or permanent incapacitation, the victim also receives GH¢15, 000.

For personnel who incur temporary disability to the extent that they are unable to engage in national service for a period less than one month due to accident or injury will be paid GH¢3,000.

Complimentary Packages

“Management is mindful of ensuring that the lives of national service personnel are protected and motivated enough to serve as starters for life,” the Executive Director stated.

Service personnel also stand to benefit from soft loans to the tune of GH¢500 payable within six months.

According to him, management had entered into partnership with MTN Ghana to offer personnel opportunities to make free inter MTN calls, free browsing on facebook, whatsapp, twitter and 500% free sms each month.

In addition, the personnel will receive 100% bonus on all MTN recharge and a free movie viewing twice a year at Silver Star Cinema.

Prof. Kofi Osei Akuoku, Board Chairman urged GLICO Life Insurance to keep good faith with personnel in the event of claims.

“We as a board have received full briefing by the Executive Director in accordance with the provisions of the National Service Act,1980 (Act 426) that management had concluded a wide range of consultations and discussions with various insurance companies and finally selected GLICO Life as the NSS Insurer,” he explained.

The Managing Director of GLICO Life, Forkuo Kyei commended NASPA executives for adopting the policy to insure their members adding that his company will deliver on its mandate.
