Tamale metropolis and its environs have been plunged into total darkness after fire had gutted the main GRIDCo transmission and distribution station at Choggu in the late hours of Monday.

The cause of the fire was not immediately  known, but sources close to DAILY GUIDE reveal that the breakers of NEDCo have been completely burnt.

The NEDco Public Relations Officer, Alhassan Abaaba, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said although the situation was under control, Tamale township is not likely to have power any moment soon.

“The 11.5 feeder breaker that supplies power to Tamale metro caught fire,” Mr Alhassan Abaaba claimed.

According to him, areas such as the teaching hospital, airport, Nyankpala and those on 34.5kv are expected to have light.

The 11.5 feeder breaker that suppliesy power to Tamale metro which caught fire, has been completely damaged, making power supply to the metro impossible for now.

The situation has affected traffic thereby causing congestion on the main roads in Tamale.

Some business owners who depend on power for their activities told DAILY GUIDE that the power cut had massively affected their businesses and appealed to the authorities to resolve the problem for their businesses to resume.
