Soldier Defiles Girl, 7

A 32-year-old military officer, Franklin Kumbo, has been remanded into custody by an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.

The soldier is accused of blindfolding and luring the victim to his room at Burma Camp in Accra where he allegedly had sexual intercourse with the girl.

Franklin Kumbo was arrested after the victim narrated her ordeal to her mother.

The accused person, who is facing a charge of defiling a minor under the age of 16, pleaded not guilty.

Bail Application

His lawyer prayed the court for bail, saying the accused had an alibi in the whole case.

The court, presided over Mrs. Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku, maintained that since Frank’s lawyer said the accused had an alibi, the soldier would interfere with investigations of the alibi when granted bail.

She therefore remanded the soldier to reappear on December 19, 2017.

She further ordered that a notice of the alibi be served on the prosecution for investigations.

Facts

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire, told the court that both the complainant and the accused live at Burma Camp in Accra.

He said in the afternoon of November 28, 2017, the victim was going to play with her friends when the soldier met her.

He said the soldier covered the face of the victim with a handkerchief and took her to his room and had sex with her.

Chief Inspector Atimbire narrated that the soldier, after the act, threatened to beat the victim if she informs anyone about the incident.

He left the victim to her fate behind his block.

The victim, as a result of the incident, fell sick and complained of severe pains in her lower abdomen and was rushed to the hospital.

The prosecution told the court that the blood came out the victim after urinating as result of the alleged defilement.

He said on November 3, 2017, the victim told her mother what the soldier had done to her and led her mother to his door.

Chief Inspector Atimbire narrated that the victim’s father, who is also a soldier, reported the matter to the Ghana Military Police which issued a medical form to the victim to be taken to the hospital for examination and treatment.

He said the matter was transferred to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service and the soldier was arrested.
