An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku, has deferred the sentencing of a 19-year-old coconut seller, who pleaded guilty to robbery.
Mubarak Adamu was arrested by a congregation and handed over to the Gbawe Police on January 11, 2018 after he attacked a banker at knife-point and made away with her handbag containing money, cheque book, keys and other personal effects.
He pleaded guilty to robbery.
The court convicted him on his own plea but deferred his sentencing to January 28, 2018.
The convict, a Junior High School Form 2 student who dropped out of school, told the court that he resides at Suhum in the Eastern Region but was instructed by a friend to move to Accra to get a better job.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu, told the court that on January 11, 2018 about 9pm, while the complainant was on her way from work, she realised that the convict was following her but did not suspect any foul play.
He said the complainant suddenly realised that the convict had doubled his steps and decided to make way for him to go but he pulled out a dagger to threaten her.
The prosecutor said the complainant out of fear handed over the bag and the convict took to his heels but the complainant raised an alarm.
He was arrested by members of a nearby church and handed over to the Gbawe Police.
Inspector Adu told the court that the accused, in his police caution statement, admitted the offence.
