President Akufo-Addo with Fulera Limann
The Wa Polytechnic is to be named after the late President Hilla Limann.
President Akufo-Addo, who announced the decision yesterday during the 20th anniversary celebration of the passing of the former scholar, diplomat and statesman, said the decision was taken by the school’s council during its meeting on January 18, this year.
The decision, he said, was intended to honour the late former president whose rein lasted only 2 years and three months following a coup d’etat led by then Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings – the man who superintended over the very election that saw Dr Limman becoming president in 1979.
The decision is awaiting parliamentary approval to make it law.
In his brief remarks, President Akufo-Addo paid glowing tribute to the late Dr Limann, describing him as an illustrious son of the Upper West Region.
He therefore stressed the need to celebrate the life of an eminent man, distinguished statesman and above all, a patriot.
President Akufo-Addo equally eulogized the woman Dr Limann left behind – Dora Fulera Limann. He commended her for conducting herself well as a former first lady.
He therefore assured of his government’s continued support and any courtesies she so deserves.
Dr Limann is touted for having lived a simple but fulfilling life with his family till he re-entered politics in 1992 as the flag bearer and founder of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and remained active in the game until his untimely passing away in 1998.
He died on January 23, 1998 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) following a brief illness.
He has also been described by others as an unsung hero of Ghana’s politics whose brief tenure in office set an unparalleled standard for selflessness, probity and loyalty that remain unchallenged.
Dr Limann is survived by Fulera, seven children, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
