THE SUBIN River, one of the most revered river deities in Kumasi and Asanteman, has been polluted at the Kejetia Bus Terminal in Kumasi.
A certain hotel, which is stationed at the Kejetia Bus Terminal, has been accused of allegedly polluting the river with human feaces, virtually on a daily basis.
The hotel is said not to have a septic tank therefore big pipes were laid underground into the sacred river through which faecal matter flows into the sacred river.
The Bantamahene, Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia VI, who made the allegation, expressed disgust about the weird behavior of the hotel’s management.
The powerful traditional leader was speaking after he had led the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC), made up of Kumasi Chiefs, to inspect the Kejetia project.
The chiefs were accompanied by some Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) members as they inspected the real state of Kejetia on Tuesday morning.
There were reports that one Nana Asante, a developer, has constructed a building on a drainage, which would adversely affect the Kejetia project.
The chiefs therefore decided to verify the reports and take a decision on them.
In the course of the inspection, the chiefs, led by the Bantamahene, realised that the Subin River, which is much revered in Asanteman, had been polluted.
Baffuor Amankwatia VI said it is unacceptable for the management of the hotel to contaminate the Subin River as if they were above the law.
He therefore called for the immediate demolition of all buildings at Kejetia, including a toilet facility, which has covered the beauty of the Kejetia Bus Terminal.
The Bantamahene said the KTC would meet at the Manhyia Palace on Thursday where they would discuss all the needed processes for the demolition exercise.
Earlier, Ing Nana Poku Agyeman, the Kumasi Roads Director, said Nana Asante’s new building is situated on a drainage system therefore it could cause flooding when it rains.
He also added that Nana Asante’s building would make it impossible for the road, leading to Kejetia, to be expanded, urging the chiefs to intervene so that project would be completed on time.
