One person died after fire gutted an apartment at Yapalsi, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.
The fire, which started in the early hours of Tuesday, spread to all 13 rooms in the apartment.
The cause of the fire, however, has not been established, but some have attributed it to the recent power outages in the region.
The deceased, identified as Ibrahim Sultan, an Information Technology (IT) specialist in his mid 30s was said to be asleep in his room when fire started.
According to Godwin Damalie, Northern Regional Assistant Chief Fire Officer, the Ghana National Fire Service called for reinforcement from Sagnarigu due to the intensity of the fire.
He said it took them three hours to quench the fire due to its intensity and the design of the apartment.
Properties worth over thousands cedis were destroyed by the fire.
The fire officer advised the public to incorporate fire safety and security in the design of their buildings.
“One of the factors that made it difficult for us to fight the fire was the numerous burglar-proofs in the house and an apartment of such nature should have both entrance and exit to make movement fast and easy in the case of emergency such as this one.”
One of the victims of the fire, Dennis Adakura told DAILY GUIDE that they lost all their belongings in the rooms.
“We are now seeking shelter elsewhere since the rooms are not yet habitable and we appeal passionately to the public to come to our aid, Mr Adakura added.
