Minerals Commission Eyes Ada Salt Deposits

The Minerals Commission has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Ada Traditional Council to properly develop the salt deposits in the area to ensure the economic wellbeing of indigenes and non-indigenes.

Board Chairman of the Commission, S.K. Boafo, gave the assurance when the board paid a courtesy call on Nene Abramkabu Akuaku III, paramount chief and members of the traditional council.

He noted that the time has come for all parties in the Ada-Songor area to come together to resolve issues in the salt industry so as to pave the way for government to ensure the development of the resources in a sustainable manner for the benefit of area, especially job creation and development.

Hon Boafo noted that President Nana Akufo-Addo was very keen about the development of the area.

In a speech made on his behalf, the paramount chief said that the traditional council met the President in August last year.

He added that President Akufo-Addo assured them that the development of the Ada Songor salt was very dear to him.

Nene Abramkabu Akuaku III noted that the Board’s visit was in fulfillment of the President’s promise.

He revealed that for several years, the Ada Songor Salt winning had been a major economic activity for the people of the area and other Ghanaians, especially during the dry season when farming activities subside.

Other members of the Traditional Council expressed concern about the illegal salt in the area and sought the board’s assistance to end the practice.

CEO of the Minerals Commission, Addae Antwi-Boasiako, noted that the new board was currently reviewing the whole minerals sector to identify the challenges and opportunities present to develop a comprehensive and sustainable system for the regulation of the industry.

He added that re-categorization of the various minerals would be done to ensure that every mineral receives the necessary attention.
