The collapsed tunnel roof
The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) has paid glowing tribute to the six workers who died at the Newmont Ahafo Mines at Kenyasi No 2 in the Brong Ahafo Region after a reclaim tunnel roof collapsed.
Four others also sustained various degrees of injury in the accident which occurred on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the premises of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited.
The victims were said to be workers of Consar Limited, a construction service company which is working on the Newmont’s Ahafo Mill Expansion Project.
GMWU, in a statement issued by General Secretary, Prince William Ankrah, expressed its heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families.
“We hope that the needed corrective measures are put in place to ensure a safe and secure workplace.”
“We, indeed, find this accident extremely unfortunate, considering the level of attention Newmont Ghana Gold Limited as a business attaches to matters of health and safety, and will stop at nothing to ensure that all employees work safely at all times,” the Union said in the statement.
According to the statement, “While we are yet to ascertain the true cause of the accident from the ongoing investigations being conducted by the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission, we want to urge all our members across the mining sector, particularly in Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, to uphold the highest standards of health and safety and make every effort to work safely at all times.”
