Broken-down vehicles on the Eastern Corridor road
The Ho Central Market Modernisation Project and the Eastern Corridor Road are expected to see some major improvements soon, DAILY GUIDE has gathered.
The modernised Ho Central Market, in a few weeks, will be commissioned, while the Eastern Corridor road project which was abandoned by the erstwhile NDC government will also see contractors returning to site before the year ends.
The road which was started in 2011, stretches from Tema in the Greater Accra Region, through Akosombo, Juapong to Hohoe, Jasikan, Kadjebi, Nkwanta, Kpasa and Oti Damanko to Bimbilla, Yendi, Garu, Misiga and finally to Kulungugu, in the Upper East Region.
Although the portion from Accra to Asikuma Junction is fairly good, the portion from Asikuma Junction to the Northern part of the country was in a bad shape hence the then government’s decision to rehabilitate it.
It has been almost seven years and the project is still not complete. So far, the portion from Ahamansu Junction, Poase Cement, Dodi Papasi through to Nkwanta has been done. A smaller portion from Asikuma Junction to parts of Peki has also seen some work. However, the larger portion of the road is still in a very deplorable state.
Commuters on the Peki-Kpeve to Hohoe stretch as well as the Hohoe to Jasikan portion have expressed indignation at the way parts of the road become impassable during the raining season.
In connection with that, the Coalition of Transport Associations, Vehicle Owners and Civil Society Groups within the Mid to the Northern segment of the Volta Region petitioned the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa to get the road fixed.
After a closed door discussion with the group, the Minister assured them that contractors have been asked to go back to site including those working on cocoa roads. He added that government is also working hard to clear the debts owed the contractors while it looks for alternative funding to complete the entire project.
Ho Central Market to be Commissioned Â
In a similar scenario; this time from the Concerned Citizens of Volta, Dr. Letsa announced that the Ho Central Market will be commissioned within a few weeks to boost business activities in the region.
The Project which is an initiative of Ghana Urban Management Pilot Project (GUMPP) comprises the Ho Central Market, a landfill site at Akrofu and a modern abattoir at Sokode.
