Charles Appiah
A 22-year-old taxi driver, Charles Appiah, who bolted after running over a police officer on duty at Doboro barrier, near Accra, Wednesday night, has finally been arrested.
Appiah was arrested at his hideout at Nsawam upon a tip off.
He ran over Sergeant Owusu Appiah, a 44-year-old police officer attached to the Formed Police Unit (FPU,) Accra Region, who was on official duty at the barrier.
The suspect, who was driving a Hyundai Getz taxi with registration number ER 871-18, reportedly abandoned the vehicle at the scene and bolted after the incident.
The cop passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 while being transported from the Police Hospital to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
When contacted, Chief Superintendent Francis Yiribaare, Divisional Commander of Amasaman, said after the act, Appiah abandoned the vehicle and escaped to Koforidua using a motorbike.
At Koforidua, the suspect was said to have contacted some prominent persons to intervene but some people who heard about the accident on air hinted the police.
With the help of the Nsawam police, he was busted and handed over to the Adjen Kotoku police.
Chief Superintendent Yiribaare confirmed that the divisional command had taken over the case and would prepare the suspect for court soon.
