Michael Essien
Former Black Stars midfielder, Michael Essien, will return to Stamford Bridge on May 18 to play in the team’s Legends Match in honour of the late Ray Wilkins.
Essien and some of his former team-mates at the club will be lining up against Inter Forever, a collection of some of Inter Milan’s former players, as they pay tribute to Wilkins who passed on in April this year.
The Ghanaian joined Chelsea in 2005 and went to make 256 appearances for the London team grabbing 25 goals in the process.
2 of those goals against Arsenal and Barcelona were chosen as the Best Goals in their respective seasons.
Essien said to Chelsea’s official website that he was very pleased at the idea of playing against at Stamford Bridge in front of the fans who showed him lots of love in his time at the club.
“It will be great to come “home” to Stamford Bridge and see the Chelsea fans and some of my team-mates again. It will be a great match and I hope we can put on a great show in memory of my great buddy, Ray Wilkins.”
Essien will be joined by the likes of Juliano Belletti, Michael Ballack, Gianfranco Zola, Marcel Desailly, Frank Leboeuf, Roberto Di Matteo and Dennis Wise for the match.
