Windstorm Causes Destruction

Over hundred houses in the Binduri District in the Upper East Region have been seriously affected by a windstorm that hit the area on the night of Saturday, May 5, 2018.

The affected areas are the Bansi Electoral Area, Koloko Electoral Area and Bazua Electoral Area.

At the Bansi Electoral Area, a total of 57 houses have been seriously affected in various ways with many of them having their roofs ripped off.  A CHPS Compound and two primary school blocks have also been affected.

At the Koloko Electoral Area, a total of 56 houses were not spared, as well as a primary school and a Junior High School. Here, nine persons were hospitalized for sustaining minor injuries; out of the number, 7 have so far been discharged, while two are still on admission.

Another affected Electoral Area is Bazua, where officials of the National Disaster Management Organization are still counting the affected houses and schools.

This is the second time the Binduri district has been hit by a windstorm in a period of 30 days. On April 8, 2018, the Nafkoliga Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound in the Nafkoliga Electoral Area, was severely hit by a windstorm, bringing work to a halt. The Nafkoliga CHPS Compound is yet to be rehabilitated.

The Acting District Manager of NADMO, Louise Laal-Bador in an interview with the DAILY GUIDE said, many more houses had been affected but yet to be captured and prays that, assistance comes in as soon as possible so that, the occupants of the affected houses do not suffer for long.

He was also concerned about the pupils of the affected schools, especially as schools will soon reopen.

Meanwhile, another windstorm has hit the Builsa North District also, destroying houses and school blocks.

At Sandema, the district capital, the Girls’ Dormitory of the Sandema Senior High School had its roofs ripped off, leaving the students at the mercy of the weather.

The District Chief Executive, David Amoabil Afoko told the DAILY GUIDE that the situation at the Sandema Senior High School was bad and the Assembly has arranged a temporal structure for the girls, while they work around the clock to get funds to rehabilitate the facility.
