A 33-year-old man has been arrested by the Tema Regional Police Command for allegedly posing as a police commander to defraud his church members under the pretext of enlisting them into the Ghana Police Service.
The culprit, Joshua Asante, a resident of Ashaiman Newtown, claimed to be an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
Briefing the media in his office, the Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Nana Asomah Hinneh, disclosed that the suspect, who was arrested on May 1, 2018, convinced the victims, who are mainly his church members, to part with various amounts of money amounting to GH¢6,100 under the pretext of enlisting them into the Ghana Police Service.
According to him, the victims reported him to the Ashaiman Police after he failed to fulfill his promise, adding that he was arrested at his hideout at Ashaiman.
He said the suspect also claimed to be an IT expert from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
DCOP Nana Asomah Hinneh said the self-styled police commander is currently in custody assisting in police investigations, adding that he would soon be arraigned before court.
